The Store It Safe (SIS) Coalition began in 2015 in response to growing concerns regarding unintentional firearm injury to children. Ohio AAP leadership joined together with leaders from other organizations and individuals with different viewpoints about firearms to develop unified, nonpartisan messaging, resources and approaches to reduce unintentional firearm injuries and deaths in children. Over the years, the coalition expanded its focus to address suicides by firearms in adolescents.

Mission

The Store It Safe (SIS) Coalition, led by Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP), is a group of child-serving agencies that have joined together to help reverse the trend of irreversible actions by keeping Ohio’s children safe from intentional and unintentional firearm injuries. We will accomplish this by helping to prevent access to lethal means of injury, increase access to behavioral health intervention and provide resources to prevent youth suicide.

Guiding Principles

We believe in educating families and youth on suicide prevention, behavioral health, and lethal means storage safety
We believe in supporting child-serving professionals and organizations with consistent and unified messaging, education, resources and support for their work in injury prevention and suicide prevention
We are guided by science, research and evidence-based approaches and interventions
We have no political position on firearm possession – our focus is on safe storage of lethal means, which includes firearms, but also medications and other items that can lead to intentional or unintentional death

Coalition Membership

Membership in the SIS Coalition is inclusive to all individuals, agencies, and organizations that support the mission of the coalition. Members should join the coalition in a commitment to:

Keep the mission and aim of the coalition top-of-mind when doing engaging with the community
Be willing to help move the mission of the coalition forward through occasional interactions with policy makers
Receive and, at times, help to disseminate relevant information to organizational members, employees and/or the population they serve through conversations, listservs, websites, social media accounts, and newsletters
Keep the coalition informed of their organization’s resources and activities related to the coalition’s mission
