Preventive Health Program (PHP)

The Ohio AAP’s Preventive Health QI Program (PHP) encourages pediatric health care providers throughout the state of Ohio to implement screening, education, and maintenance of a variety of preventive health measures. Providers will implement change in two of the following five areas: maternal mental health, ADHD, oral health, newborn screening, and food insecurity.

The Preventive Health Program launched in February 2022. PHP consists of a Webinar of the Month program, new resources, and a QI Project that launched in February 2023.  Each webinar will have CME/MOC Part 2 credit available and will be on emergent child health topics.

General Information

In the latest QI project, conducted February - September 2023, physicians and practices selected two screening tools to identify needs of patients. This included screening for social determinants of health and injuries in the home. Patients over the age of twelve were screened for depression and mothers were screened for maternal depression. Many practices chose to screen patients for oral health, and fluoride varnish and dental referrals were utilized.

QI Program Results

The top three data impacts of the latest wave were as follows:

  • Data was submitted for 5,288 total screens out 6,037 eligible patients, meaning 87.5% of eligible patients were screened
  • Social Determinants of Health screenings saw the highest increase at 79%
  • The number of patients managed (receiving referrals, resources or appropriate discussions) reached 100% in month 1 and stayed above 93% throughout the project action period
