New Training Requirements for All DEA Registered Practitioners

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has enacted a new training requirement for all DEA registered practitioners “on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.” The requirement goes into effect on June 27, 2023, and will be a one-time eight-hour requirement. A box will be added for initial or renewing practitioners on the DEA registration form at that time.

Many different types of education are available to meet this requirement. The details are included in the letter available here. At this time, the Ohio AAP is reviewing existing educational opportunities to meet this requirement, as well as potential new offerings. The American Medical Association has education available to help meet this requirement on the Education Hub at: https://edhub.ama-assn.org/course/302

Please be on the lookout for more information in upcoming newsletters as other details or trainings become available. If you have questions, please contact Elizabeth Dawson at the Ohio AAP at edawson@ohioaap.org.
