As an Ohio voter and supporter of the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, I respectfully urge you to pass House Bill 559. The bill is sponsored by Reps. Gonzales and Landis and is currently under consideration in House Health Committee.
Ohio AAP is made up of pediatricians from across the state who support vaccines and the promotion of accurate information about the safety and effectiveness of immunization. With HB 559, you have the chance to make a real difference in the health of Ohio children at no cost to the minority of Ohioans who cannot or choose not to vaccinate their children.
HB 559 standardizes the vaccine opt-out process and improves the handling of data. This means parents of children who cannot receive vaccinations can make an informed decision about whether a school or school district is safe for their child. It also means that in the event of an outbreak, schools will know which students are immunized and which are at graver risk. Again, the bill does this without taking away parents’ right to choose whether to vaccinate their children.
By supporting HB 559, you stand in good company: 82% of people believe in the benefits of vaccines and 88% believe the benefits of immunization outweigh the narrow risk of complications, according to a recent Pew survey. Reputable organizations like the Ohio State Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Ohio Children’s Hospital Association, Association of Ohio Health Commissioners, and Ohio Academy of Family Physicians all support HB 559.
The legislature has taken tremendous strides in recent years to advance children’s health through medical, safety, awareness, and other improvements. Your support for HB 559 would continue that great legacy and would have the gratitude of the vast majority of Ohio parents.
