Support Life-Saving ‘Store It Safe’ Program Through Dec. 31

Recent data on adolescent suicide has highlighted a number of alarming trends among Ohio adolescents – including dramatic increases in the number of deaths over the past 10 years, a rise in suicides among younger children, and disparities impacting transgender and African American youth. The new data supports our continued efforts to expand the Store It Safe initiative, which was originally launched in 2016 and focused on gun storage to protect young children, to also address the growing concerns of teen suicide. With support from our members and partners, we are taking a three-fold approach to the expanded program:

  1. Improve the recognition of adolescent suicide risk through depression screening at every doctor’s visit in order to capture at-risk teens early, by increasing the knowledge of pediatricians, other healthcare providers, and school-based professionals.
  2. Encourage families with children and/or adolescents to lock up any firearms, medications, and alcohol to provide a barrier to these lethal means.
  3. Where possible, provide families with a lock box to encourage families to change their behavior in the home.

Thanks to the support of our members since the launch of the Ohio AAP’s 2019 Year-End Campaign to expand the Store it Safe program, we have raised more than $1,300 toward our goal of $5,000 by December 31st. By raising these funds, we will be able impact an additional 865,000 children and will adequately train 2,900 pediatricians across the state of Ohio. We need your help to make it happen.

“We know that suicide is the leading cause of death for children age 10-14 in Ohio, the 2nd leading cause of death for all adolescents, and the rates continue to increase,” said Melissa Wervey Arnold, CEO, Ohio AAP. “Our goal is to put a barrier between contemplation and action, and increase the knowledge of healthcare providers and parents so that we can help reverse this fatal trend.”

Would you be willing to make a special year-end donation of $50, $100 or whatever you can allocate to help us meet our goal and bring life saving resources to nearly 1 million children and adolescents in Ohio? We simply cannot do it without you.  Your support will make a real, lasting impact in the lives of Ohio’s children and adolescents. Visit to become a part of the Store It Safe movement today.
