Action Alert: Urge Ohio Sen. Rob Portman to Oppose a Repeal of ACA

Ohio AAP members are urged to join a national effort next week to oppose attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) without a suitable replacement. A Columbus pediatrician and Ohio AAP member, Beth Liston, MD, FAAP, is organizing a rally at Ohio Senator Rob Portman’s Columbus office Tuesday, December 20 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm at Sen. Portman’s Ohio office at 37 W. Broad St. in Columbus. This rally is happening at the same time as similar events at senate offices across the country.

“Repealing ACA without any plan in place will have a catastrophic impact on the health of Ohioans,” said Beth Liston, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician in Columbus. “More than 22 million people gained health insurance coverage since the law passed, including six million young adults. It is irresponsible and unacceptable to leave all of these Americans without essential health care while the new administration tries to figure out what to do.”

The Ohio AAP, along with our national organization, supports this effort. ACA passed in 2010, increasing access to quality health care for all Americans. Along with creating the health care marketplace, the law created a number of reforms that had a huge impact on the health of Americans, including:

  • Created a Health Care Bill of Rights, which included protecting your choice of doctors
  • Required free preventative care for children and adults insured by new plans
  • Prohibits denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions
  • Extended coverage for young adults on their parents’ plans to age 26
  • Eliminated lifetime limits on insurance coverage, including hospital stays

Data shows health care costs have slowed compared to costs before ACA passed. In addition, data shows the innovations are improving costs and quality of care with fewer hospital re-admissions and fewer preventable infections.

“Coverage for preventative services has been invaluable for the health of Ohio’s children,” said Melissa Wervey Arnold, Ohio AAP CEO. “Well care visits and immunizations are what keeps our children healthy. ACA requires these services be covered, removing a huge cost barrier for many families.”
