ABMS Visiting Scholars Research and Scholarship Opportunity

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is offering a unique research and scholarship opportunity that is available for early career physicians, junior faculty, fellows, residents and others holding advanced degrees in public health, health services research and other relevant disciplines.

ABMS is inviting applications for the 2017-2018 ABMS Visiting Scholars Program, a one-year, part-time program where scholars conduct projects and research, in collaboration with their institution and ABMS and Member Board leaders, that is relevant to physician assessment, continuing professional development, physician self-regulation, and quality improvement.  In addition, ABMS is pleased to announce two special areas of research/project interest:

  • Improving physicians’ diagnostic accuracy: In partnership with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the ABMS Visiting Scholars Program seeks applications for projects that explore opportunities to improve physicians’ diagnostic accuracy. Projects may address, for example, use and interpretation of tests, clinical reasoning and use of health IT in the diagnostic process.
  • Evaluating effectiveness of innovations in orthopedic surgical training and performance improvement: In partnership with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, the ABMS Visiting Scholars Program seeks applications for evaluating the effectiveness and outcomes of orthopedic surgical simulation, methods of evaluating orthopedic surgery skills, and the impact of Orthopedic Surgery Certification or Maintenance of Certification on patient outcomes.

Applications are due no later than midnight, May 1, 2017.

Scholars’ projects may be ongoing or build on existing research; institution’s or organization’s quality improvement work provides fertile ground for exciting and informative research.  Each Scholar receives an award of $12,500 to support their program-related research and travel expenses.
