Description: Prevention and action in regards to bullying has become more and more important in the world today. Consequences of bullying range from fear of attending school to attending school with weapons and most concerning is the consequence of suicide and school violence. Defining bullying is the first step and it is the role of the schools, community, parent and Pediatricians to help in the cause for prevention, identification and treatment to reduce the incidence of violence.

Completion Criteria: Please allow for 2 to 3 hours to read the reference material and answer the questions. Once you begin the assessment, you have until the end of the calendar year to complete it, but are not required to complete it in one sitting. Please note: answers may not save when exiting an incomplete assessment; if concerned about ability to return, we recommend that you keep a list of the answers that your provided to enter later should your answers not save. You must answer all of the items AND answer 80% of them correctly in order to receive credit for this assessment.

Credit Assignment Criteria: Upon completion of the activity, you will be required to enter your American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Diplomate number*, state and birthdate (MM/DD). Your ABP Diplomate number can be found in your ABP online profile. Prevention and action in regards to bullying has become more and more important in the world today. Consequences of bullying range from fear of attending school to attending school with weapons and most concerning is the consequence of suicide and school violence. Defining bullying is the first step and it is the role of the schools, community, parent and Pediatricians to help in the cause for prevention, identification and treatment to reduce the incidence of violence.

Target Audience: The target audience is pediatric healthcare providers, the majority of whom are general pediatricians and subspecialty pediatric physicians.

Objectives: Following completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Define Bullying and uniform definitions among public health.
  2. Explain prevention of bullying and school violence.
  3. Explain school culture around Anti-Bullying and what can schools do today.
  4. Describe the medical implications and treatment of bullying.

Needs Assessment/Gap: 

Bullying is an important public health issue in the United States. Up to 30% of children report exposure to such victimization. Not only does it hurt bully victim, but it also negatively impacts the bully, other children, parents, school staff, and health care providers. Because bullying often presents with accompanying serious emotional and behavioral symptoms, there has been an increase in psychiatric referrals to emergency departments. Emergency physicians may be the first responders in the health care system for bullying episodes. Victims of bullying may present with nonspecific symptoms and be reluctant to disclose being victimized, contributing to the underdiagnosis and underreporting of bully victimization. Physicians therefore need to have heightened awareness of physical and psychosocial symptoms related to bullying. They should rapidly screen for bullying, assess for injuries and acute psychiatric issues that require immediate attention, and provide appropriate referrals such as psychiatry and social services. This activity will identify core elements of a responses to bullying in pediatric care, and discuss best practices for building services and supports that improve the treatment of children who experience bullying. Previous policy statements and research have found that pediatric medical providers have the opportunity to improve gaps in this type of care through training integrated into standard professional development.
